FS1 Honors BIG EAST Founder Dave Gavitt During Second Annual Gavitt Tipoff Games
FS1 honors BIG EAST founder and the conference’s first commissioner Dave Gavitt during the second annual Gavitt Tipoff Games, a conference challenge between the BIG EAST and Big Ten, this week.
A Gavitt Tipoff Games doubleheader begins Tuesday, Nov. 15, on FS1 with a huge matchup between local rivals Maryland and Georgetown at 6:30 PM ET. Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery call the action live from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., and during the game speak with John Thompson, Jr., former Georgetown head coach and father of current head coach John Thompson III. Thompson, Jr. also played at Providence while Gavitt was an assistant coach for the Friars.
Tuesday night’s studio coverage originates from CenturyLink Center in Omaha, where Creighton head coach Greg McDermott joins host Rob Stone and analyst Steve Lavin during halftime of Maryland-Georgetown before leading his No. 22-ranked Bluejays against No. 9 Wisconsin at 8:30 PM ET.
On Wednesday, Nov. 16, Butler welcomes Northwestern to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at 7:00 PM ET. Raftery is alongside play-by-play announcer Tim Brando for the call, and the two welcome in BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman as well as NCAA Vice President of Men’s Basketball Championships Dan Gavitt, son of Dave, to talk about the challenge and Dave Gavitt’s legacy.
FS1 continues to pay tribute to the late Dave Gavitt as its coverage of the 2016 Gavitt Tipoff Games wraps up on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 8:30 PM ET with Rutgers at DePaul.
