FOX Sports Showcases Full Slate of Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship Matches for First Time in English-Language Television History
USA on Quest for First Olympic Berth Since 2008; Faces Mexico, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic in Group Stage
NEW YORK – For the first time in English-language television history, FOX Sports presents a full slate of matches and extensive studio coverage of the Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship from Thursday, March 18, through Tuesday, March 30, on FS1 and FS2. The tournament features eight teams from North America, the Caribbean and Central America with the two semifinal winners securing a berth to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Alexi Lalas, a member of the 1992 and 1996 U.S. Olympic team, and Maurice Edu, who played on the USA’s 2008 squad, join host Rob Stone for studio coverage in Los Angeles.
Play-by-play announcer John Strong and analyst Stu Holden, a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, lead the network’s game coverage. The duo has the call for all U.S. Men’s National Team matches (USA-Costa Rica on Thursday, March 18, at 5:30 PM ET; Dominican Republic-USA on Sunday, March 21, at 6:30 PM ET; and Mexico-USA on Wednesday, March 24, at 9:30 PM ET) as the Americans aim for their first Olympic berth since 2008. Strong and Holden also call a semifinal and final.
Former Mexican international Mariano Trujillo joins play-by-play announcer Adrian Garcia Marquez to call non-USA matches in Group B and share Group A matchups with play-by-play announcer Jake Zivin and analyst Warren Barton. Trujillo and Garcia Marquez open their slate with 2012 Olympic gold medal winners Mexico as they face the Dominican Republic on Thursday, March 18, at 7:30 PM ET, while Zivin and Barton kick off tournament duties with Canada vs. El Salvador on Friday, March 19, at 6:00 PM ET. Longtime FIFA and CONCACAF match commissioner and National Hall of Famer Dr. Joe Machnik contributes to telecasts, lending expertise on rule interpretations and analyzing officiating decisions.
