Tonight’s Top Quotes:
- “It used to be that everybody feared the U.S. and the US was always going in confident to these tournaments. But I think when you win, it’s easy to get comfortable. And I think this is a humble moment for the program, for the players, for the coaching staff, and it’s a wakeup call for the entire program because it’s easy to turn a blind eye when the senior team is winning, but this stems down at the youth level. The last time there was a youth World Cup championship that was won came in 2012. And that was with [Julie] Ertz, [Crystal] Dunn, Sam Mewis, Morgan Brian, so we are failing at the U-17 level, we are failing at the U-20 level, and it has to be a priority to develop players to get them fit again, to get them technically sound, tactically sound and now we’re chasing the rest of the world.”
- FOX Sports analyst Carli Lloyd on what the USWNT needs to do to get back on top
- “It’s also a wakeup call for the NWSL, our women’s professional league, and the most successful professional league in American history and fancies itself the best league in the world. Five of the 184 players left in this World Cup are from the NWSL – FIVE – Jessica Berman, you’re the commissioner of the NWSL, this is happening on your watch. And yes, this is a wakeup call. It is a battle for hearts and minds. This is an arms race for relevance and credibility with Europe. And unlike MLS, you have the advantage of a history and a success and a head start. So, you’ve got to solidify yourself as the best league, with the best players, with the best competition or you concede defeat and you’re never going to get that back because it’s not coming back and all of the European nations and all of the European clubs, they are coming for the U.S. so either fight or just give it away.”
- FOX Sports analyst Alexi Lalas on what the USWNT needs to do to get back on top
- “It’s just a testament with how many changes [Jorge] Vida has had on this team, with everything that has happened within the federation. We talk about them having 17 debutants to this squad, and we talked about the U.S. having 14; they had 17 That is absolutely incredible to have that many new players play in the World Cup and to make it farther than they ever have before. And to make it farther than they ever have before and have young players on the field be able to step up in critical moments and win a game like that? This is absolutely incredible, and all the credit to the Spanish federation and to this Spanish team to be able to do that.”

- “The press that Sweden sustained when they lost possession of the ball – as soon as Japan got possession of the ball, Sweden was right there to either foul or regain possession. That speaks wonders … and that goes a lot with organization, training involved, tactically, positional – but also the endurance, the physicality, and your fitness. This is not Group Stage anymore; a lot of hours and a lot of minutes have been under these players’ legs. And so, to sustain that type of rhythm, to defend right away and be synchronized at the same time – that’s what I really loved out of Sweden today.”
