Tonight’s Top Quotes:
- “Today you can say that the tank was just empty, there was no energy left, but yet they showed us their never-say-die Matilda: until the very end, they kept fighting. They changed the country for the better when it comes to soccer, they wrote history – best finish ever. So, not tonight and maybe not tomorrow, but I hope in the coming days they’re going to be proud of what they did and look back and just have a happy smile on their face.”
- FOX Sports analyst Ari Hingst on Australia’s outlook following dream FIFA Women’s World Cup run | WATCH
- “Congratulations to Sweden. There’s something to be said for being consistently good enough to play in the third-place game and win that. It’s only going to get harder for Sweden to win this, it’s not going to get any easier.”

- “They have to get this hire right. This is a very important hire and there isn’t much time with the Olympics, but there’s a World Cup looming in another four years and, you know, players have been involved in the past as far as getting their take on what coach should come in and coach the team. I think moving forward, my opinion, no player should be involved in the selection process. I think that they need to do something out of the box a little bit. But the manager that comes in, the coach they essentially choose, has to come in has to create a good culture within the group and not just with the players, but with the staff as well. So they have to get this right – male or female – the best person for the job should get this job.”
- FOX Sports analyst Carli Lloyd on the open USWNT head coach position | WATCH
- “This is a plum job right now because obviously the historically worst finish in a World Cup, so now you get to come back in and kind of be the savior to whoever ultimately it is. There are lists out there and there are usual suspects, even Sarina Wiegman, even though you know, the posturing over there from the English. Look, you leave no stone unturned, you actually go out there and you spend some money and maybe try some different things going forward and to Carli’s point. So for example, we mentioned Sarina Wiegman, Tony Gustavsson, those usual suspects there, but how about a guy like Jim Curtin. I know he just signed a deal for the Philadelphia Union, but he’s talked about wanting to coach the U.S. Men’s National Team. I think he would be a prime candidate for the for the Women’s National Team, if it was something that he would do. But this federation has got to take the time and make sure that you get this right, because this next cycle is going to be big and learn from the previous and [Vlatko] Andonovski regime, because he did not clean house when he came in. Whoever comes in, clean house, use the Olympics as a training field and then go on from there.”
- FOX Sports analyst Alexi Lalas on the open USWNT head coach position | WATCH
- “The players have been successful on the pitch, but they understand their responsibility off it and for Sam [Kerr]to come out and say what she said she’s completely right. We need more funding and the government has answered that call. They’ve pledged over $200 million that will be poured into grassroots football, essentially there to build appropriate facilities for women and girls to engage with football. We have a strong participation rate. There’s over 1.4 million registered footballers here in this country and about 16% is female. There’s a strong push to try and get that gender balance to 50/50. So this government support will be able to do that, because if we’ve got an influx of young girls that want to play football in this country, there needs to be appropriate places for them to do so.”

- “There’s nothing better than this moment that I’m living right now.”
