Germany will play Sweden for women's soccer Olympic gold

Germany will take on Sweden in the gold medal match on Friday for Olympic gold. The two countries won their respective semifinals on Tuesday, clinching their spot in the women's final.

As has been the case most of the Olympics, Sweden didn't play particularly pretty soccer against Brazil. They failed to score, but for the second match in a row, ended up in a penalty shootout. And just like against the United States in the quarterfinals, Sweden won on kicks from the spot, again getting two stops and only missing one.

After Sweden booked their spot in the final, Germany took on the same Canada team that they lost to in the group stage. But this time around, Germany were too good. They were dominant from the start, scoring in each half to make their first-ever Olympic gold medal game. Now they'll try to add a gold medal to the three bronzes they collected in 2000, 2004 and 2008. It will be Germany coach Silvia Neid's last chance to win gold as she announced last year her plan to step down from the role after Rio 2016.

Like Germany, Sweden has never played in an Olympic final before. They've never even won a medal before, coming closest when they lost to Germany in the 2004 bronze medal match. But manager Pia Sundhage did come away with a gold medal as the boss of the U.S. in 2012.
