7 Eagles make 3s in Winthrop's 66-45 win over UNC Asheville
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Nych Smith scored 15 points, Bjorn Broman made four from the arc to reach 200 3-pointers in his career and Winthop defeated UNC Asheville 66-45 on Monday.
Broman became the seventh player in program history to make 200 3-pointers. Seven Eagles scored from the arc. Adam Pickett had 11 points and Kyle Zunic 10 for Winthrop (13-6, 5-1 Big South), which made 13 of 40 3-point attempts to 4 of 24 for the Bulldogs (2-18, 0-6), who lost their eighth straight.
The Eagles, who beat the Bulldogs in their conference opener 80-65, swept the regular-season conference series for the first time since 2008-09.
Tajion Smith scored 17 points and Stephen Edoka 11 for Asheville, the youngest team in the country with eight freshmen and five sophomores.
Winthrop, leading by 11 at halftime, opened the second half with a Zunic 3-pointer and two free throws from Josh Ferguson and led by comfortable double figures the rest of way, leading by as many as 24 late.
Winthrop scored the game's first 13 points with Broman making consecutive 3-pointers and Charles Falden capping the run with another 3. The lead reached 19 before Asheville cut it to 32-21 at halftime.
