Aaahhh! Arena uses jumbo 'Home Alone' homage as distraction ploy
The Long Beach State basketball program has found an interesting use for its 16-by-40-foot, NCAA-record-setting scoreboard inside of its giant blue pyramid located within a few miles of the Southern California coast.
The board, billed by the school as the largest wall-mounted video board in an on-campus arena in the nation, sits in the line of sight of free-throw shooters facing the south basket inside of Walter Pyramid.
So against visiting San Diego State on Tuesday night, in a game televised on FOX Sports West’s Prime Ticket, the Walter Pyramid operations crew took a unique approach to trying to distract Jeremy Hemsley at the line.
You can see their slick shout-out to a Christmas classic in the video at top of the page, and here’s a photo showing you what the Aztecs freshman had staring him in the face:
Movie night at the basketball game? Nope ... just a very SoCal way to try to distract an opposing shooter.
Yup, the 49ers went “Home Alone” on us.
For the record, it was only the photo of the iconic Macaulay Culkin image, not a video playing while Hemsley shot.
Also for the record, Hemsley made both shots en route to a perfect 5-of-5 night at the stripe. And the 49ers, trailing by 11 after Hemsley’s second make in the play in question, actually did better afterward, rallying to take the lead in the final minutes before ultimately falling, 76-72.
