Arizona State Basketball: Bobby Hurley to rescue the Sun Devils
Arizona State basketball is headed in the right direction under second year head coach Bobby Hurley.
When was the last time Arizona State made headlines consistently in basketball? The Sun Devils have been struggling for relevancy since James Harden was a roaming Tempe.
Now, they have head coach Bobby Hurley, and he’s the perfect man to steer them in the correction direction.
We all remember Hurley as a member of the great Duke basketball squad. But he has the capabilities of molding into a great coach as well.
In his first season with the Sun Devils, Hurley’s record was 15-17. The team was only able to win five games in Pac-12 play, proving that 2015-16 was only year one of their rebuild.
This season, ASU’s scoring is up and their defensive numbers have improved. In a recent game against UNLV, the Sun Devils tied the school record for 3-pointers made in a game with 18.
They only have two seniors and a bus-load of young players, so this program is being built from the bottom of the Pac-12 up again. Hurley has experience rebuilding programs in the past, as he helped lead Wagner to elite NEC status and led Buffalo to the NCAA Tournament in 2014-15.
The goal for Arizona State is to be relevant in Pac-12 play and reach the NCAA Tournament. The biggest task to complete in order to reach the goal has to be recruiting, while developing the young core talent that they already have in house.
Lastly, Hurley has to ensure that the Arizona State has a solid culture in place. Culture in a basketball program can build the necessary habits and tendencies that create winning situations. The Sun Devils may not be competitive this year, but they sure do have the potential in the future.
