ASU WBB: Sun Devils Blown Out By Maryland

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Arizona State, ranked 23rd in the latest AP Poll, looked to bounce back after their surprising loss last week at Marquette versus No. 6 Maryland. Sun Devils proved to be no match for the Terrapins, losing 83-42.

Last year, Arizona State headed into their Thanksgiving tournament with a loss and faced No. 2 South Carolina in Hawaii. The Sun Devils went on to lose that game by only two points, as the Gamecocks hit two free throws in the final second of regulation.

Spinning it to this year, the Sun Devils entered the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout with a loss and facing a top-ten team in Maryland. This time though, the Sun Devils were outmatched from the get-go, as Maryland’s scoring ability and depth proved to be too much. Maryland came out on fire, and never cooled down as the Terrapins led ASU 47-13 at halftime. In the first half, Maryland shot 70 percent from the field, while Arizona State only shot 19 percent (5-for-26 shooting).

The second half proved to be a lot more competitive as Maryland outscored ASU 36-29, but the first half deficit proved to be too large. In total, the Sun Devils shot 28 percent from the field with Reili Richardson the leading scorer with 12 points. Maryland were led by stars Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Brionna Jones. Walker-Kimbrough finished with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists while Jones finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The senior trio of Sophie Brunner, Quinn Dornstauder and Kelsey Moos continue to struggle to begin the season. The three combined for only 9 points on 4-for-13 shooting and 12 rebounds. For a team known for its defense, the Sun Devils had trouble defending Maryland as Terrapins finished the game shooting 55 percent and Maryland outscored ASU in the paint 56-20. Maryland out-rebounded Arizona State 47-28, but the difference was the turnover battle. Arizona State finished with 20 turnovers, six more than Maryland, but the Terrapins got 30 points off those turnovers, while ASU was only able to get 11 points off turnovers.

Head coach Charli Turner Thorne mentioned that there would be growing pains with a very young team. The Sun Devils fall to 2-2, and have to quickly put this game in the rear-view mirror, as they have to play St. John’s Saturday in their final game of the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout.

Tip off of Arizona State-St. John’s is Saturday at 2 p.m.
