Auburn Basketball: Early Season Report Card
Here we give our report card for Auburn basketball through the first seven games of the season and give an outlook of the games ahead.
Auburn basketball is in the midst of a long break, so we thought it would be a good time to give our early season report card through the first seven games.
The Tigers started out the season with three cupcake games against North Florida, Georgia State and Eastern Kentucky. Auburn basketball avoided picking up any bad losses in those games and came out unscathed winning every game by pretty much the same score (83-66, 83-65 and 85-64).
Then they traveled down to Cancun where they faced a couple of powerhouse basketball schools.
In their opener they played exceptionally well in the first half again Texas Tech and then held on for a 2-point victory 67-65, which was by far their lowest point total of the season.
In the championship game they hung around with a ranked Purdue team in the first half, but the Boilermakers caught fire from three in the second and ran away with it 96-71.
Outside of Kentucky, Purdue might be the best team Auburn basketball faces all year. They are currently ranked 18th with their only two losses coming against number one Villanova and number 11 Louisville.
Auburn bounced back with a shaky win against USC Upstate. The Tigers put up an impressive 90 points, but gave up an alarming 83.
Then last Saturday they traveled to Bartow Arena and took down a very good UAB squad 74-70 thanks to a second half comeback.

The wins over Texas Tech and UAB will go a long way in determining whether or not Auburn basketball reaches the NCAA Tournament.
So far Auburn hasn’t suffered any bad losses that could hurt their resume, which is what you want in the out-of-conference slate. Just don’t lose to teams you should crush.
That will be the case with Auburn’s next three games as they play Boston College in Madison Square Garden and then host Coastal Carolina and Mercer.
If they get through that stretch without a loss then I’ll be happy.
Then they finish off the out-of-conference slate with games against Oklahoma and UCONN. Neither team is what we thought they would be this year, which means Auburn basketball has to at least win one of those games.
As for the early season part of the schedule, I give the team an A in terms of wins and losses. Certainly sitting at 6-1 with the lone loss being against a rank team is pretty good.
There are some glaring weaknesses in the post. Auburn basketball has gone up against some really good centers, and we just don’t have the firepower to combat that with.
However, the young freshman group of Jared Harper, Danjel Purifoy and Mustapha Heron are quickly becoming stars. I can’t wait to see them continue to develop throughout the season.
