Big Week for Auburn Basketball; What They Need to Do

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 9:26 p.m. ET

This will be a huge week for Auburn basketball as they wrap up the out-of-conference schedule with games against Oklahoma and UCONN.

It’s been a great start to the season for Auburn basketball as they’ve already won eight games in the out-of-conference slate. That loss in Madison Square Garden at the buzzer to Boston College does hurt, but it shouldn’t kill their resume at the end of the season — that’s still an ACC team.

Texas Tech is probably their best win, but they have a chance to improve upon that this week with Oklahoma and UCONN coming up.

Now neither of those teams are having the year we expected, but those are still big name programs that will boost a resume.

As expected, the suspensions of Horace Spencer and Bryce Brown will be lifted for these two games, but as Bruce Pearl their roles will be different.

The insertion of freshman Austin Wiley couldn’t have come at a better time. The Tigers have been getting killed on the glass, and Wiley should help alleviate that problem – plus the return of Spencer.

Both of these games will be a really good test to show just how good this Auburn basketball team is this year. We saw how they struggled on the road in the Garden, now they’ll have to travel north again to play two big name programs.

A loss to either team shouldn’t hurt the resume for Auburn basketball because they’re pretty much road games, especially against UCONN. However, a win could certainly come in handy when the selection committee is considering Auburn basketball this March.

Plus it could really give this team some momentum going into conference play.

It’s hard to say that the week before Christmas is the most crucial point of the season for a college basketball team, but this week will be huge in proving to this young team that they can play with the big boys.

Even if Auburn basketball just splits these games this week I think it will go a long way in boosting the resume and confidence of this team.
