Bruce Brown Triple Double Leads Miami over SC State

Bruce Brown had the second Triple-Double in Miami Hurricanes history and first ever by a Freshman, as they defeated South Carolina State 82-46.

Brown finished the night with 11 points, 11 rebounds and ten assists. He capped off the rare achievement with an assist on a D.J. Vasiljevic’s 3-pointer with 2:59 left. Brown also added two steals and shot five of 11 from the floor. He had a very efficient night with only two turnovers.

Vasiljevic led the Hurricanes with 17 points. He finished five of 11 from beyond  the arc and two of two from the line to reach 17. Davon Reed with 15 and Ja’Quan Newton with 11 were the other Hurricanes in double figures.

Eleven of the 12 players on the Miami roster saw some action against South Carolina State and 11 scored, a season high. The Hurricanes’ roster is short this season after some dismissals and defections.

Miami jumped started to an 18-0 lead. After the Bulldogs scored to cut the lead to 16, they would never get any closer. The Hurricanes led 42-14 at Halftime and coasted to the 36 point win.

Miami continued to play strong defense. SC State shot 29 percent for the game and made just four of 14 three points attempts. Even in the fairly even second half, The ‘Canes held SC State to 34.3 percent from the floor.

The Hurricanes had one of their best games offensively. They shot 53.4 percent from the floor and 40 percent on threes. Miami re-found its stroke the last two games after struggling shooting the ball in the three games prior to the wins over South Carolina State and Wofford. They also had 24 assists to 12 turnovers.

Miami made 17 of their 40 three point attempts in the wins over Wofford and South Carolina State. The Hurricanes were eight for 42 in their previous three games from beyond the arc and 38.2 percent overall.

Miami is off for final exams until December 16. They host Florida Atlantic, George Washington and Columbia between the 16th and 28th in the final three non-conference games of the season. The ‘Canes host North Carolina State in the ACC opener on New Year’s Eve at the Watsco Center.

The win over SC State was Miami’s third in a row with Brown and fellow Freshman Dewan Huell in the starting lineup. The ‘Canes are 3-0 and have won by an average of 22.7 points per game.

Next up for Miami is 5-3 Florida Atlantic on December 16 at 7:00pm at the Watsco Center.
