Chris Mullin 'frustrated' with NCAA over freshmen eligibility ruling
St. John's head coach Chris Mullin is growing tired of waiting for the NCAA to make a ruling on the eligibility of freshman point guard Marcus LoVett.
That frustration boiled over into Saturday's press conference after the Red Storm defeated Sonoma State, 64-46, in the final exhibition game of the season, according to Chris Barca of ZagsBlog.com.
“It’s absurd and I’m 100 percent frustrated,” Mullin said. “I’m thinking about flying to Indianapolis myself. I have some friends there with the Pacers, I may fly to Indianapolis myself to investigate.”
“Of course,” Mullin said, when asked if having LoVett eligible would help lessen the pressure on Mussini. “And he deserves to play. The kid has done everything.”
Kassoum Yakwe, a freshman forward who committed to St. John's in August, is also waiting for a ruling on his eligibility. This has forced both two sit out two preseason games this week. Without LoVett, who was seen on crutches this week, the ball handling duties have fallen solely on freshman guard Federico Mussini. In two games, Mussini has recorded four assists and has committed 11 turnovers in 59 minutes of action.
St. John's opens the season on Friday against Wagner.
