Coach K Announces Return to Sidelines for Duke Basketball

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:38 p.m. ET

Coach K announced that he will return to the men’s basketball program after his recovery from surgery for Duke’s home game against Pitt this weekend.

Duke Men’s Basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced on his SiriusXM radio show that he will return to coach the Blue Devils this weekend. Coach K was forced to take a leave of absence and miss seven games after undergoing a successful back surgery that took four weeks of recovery.

Even though Krzyzewski was out recovering from surgery, he was still involved with the program and in contact with the team. He communicated with acting head coach Jeff Capel and the coaching staff and held a team meeting at his house where he disciplined the players for their lack of focus. Coach K notes:

“I’m going to be back on the sidelines on Saturday when we play Pitt. Basically though I’ve been doing stuff every day, really, with our program. Not as much with the physical nature but with preparation and some of the things that you just have to do in running a big time program.”

Duke Basketball struggled going 4-3 under interim head coach Jeff Capel without their Hall of Fame coach. Part of that was due to a tough part of the schedule playing at Florida State and at Louisville, but also poor execution and focus against NC State. However, Capel began turning things around for the team after recording two straight road wins in a thrilling game at Wake Forest and a tough win over a Top 25 Notre Dame team.

Hopefully the return of Coach K will keep the momentum going for the Blue Devils as the postseason approaches. Duke Basketball will host Pittsburgh this weekend at 1:00pm before their first rivalry matchup with UNC in Cameron Thursday night.
