Daniel scores 28 to lead Howard to 72-63 win over Coppin St.

WASHINGTON (AP) James Daniel III scored 28 points and Marcel Boyd had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead Howard to a 72-63 win over Coppin State on Saturday.

Daniel, the nation's leading scorer at 28.5 points a game, made 9 of 21 shots with three 3-pointers, and 7 of 8 free throws for the Bison (8-9, 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). His low game of the season is 19.

Terry Harris had 16 points, Keith Shivers 13 and Christian Kessee 13 for the Eagles (2-14, 0-3), who have lost 12 straight.

Coppin State led 37-33 at the half, hitting five 3-pointers while the Bison missed all seven from beyond the arc before the break.

But in the second half, Howard warmed up, shooting 52 percent (12 of 23) with four 3-pointers. Daniel scored 18 points and Boyd 13. Meanwhile, Coppin State went 1 of 12 on 3s.
