Davon Reed and Kamari Murphy Join Coach L at ACC Media Days
The Miami Hurricanes are sending Seniors Davon Reed and Kamari Murphy to ACC Media Days in Charlotte to join Head Coach Jim Larranaga.
Reed and Murphy met with the Miami Media today ahead of their trip to Charlotte for ACC Media Days on Wednesday that will be held at the Ritz Carlton. They are the only Seniors on an otherwise young roster. Reed and Murphy, along with Junior Point Guard Ja’Quan Newton will be expected to be the leaders of this year’s team
Murphy is in his second season with Miami after spent the first two years of his collegiate career at Oklahoma State. He opened the press conference today. Murphy initially spoke about being the team captain and the responsibility of teaching the freshman the team principles and the defensive principles.
Asked about the incoming freshmen, Reed and Murphy are impressed with their offensive ability, their work ethic and about the potential of each of them having an impact on this year’s team. About being the team leaders, Reed said:
“Just trying to be that leader more than anything and let people find their way but also you know making sure they know what it is that we do”
The team has been working hard and scrimmaging to get to know each other. They mentioned the defense is good but has a long way to go. Murphy said: “I think we’re more than prepared if we had a game tomorrow we wouldn’t be bad at all it’s just not what we want (it) to be.”
Reed spoke about the experience last’s team had and how their trip to the N.I.T. the year before helped them last season.
“I was just thinking about earlier we were blessed…we were just so beyond…good so balanced we had a little bit of everything and going to the NIT the year before coming back last year really helped because we were just that more you know together on the same page and on top of you know being a very talented team”
Murphy continued and discussed how this year’s team will be different.
“So this year we (are) also talented with it and in a very different way we got some young guy(s) that definitely know how to play offensively and defensively…you can see a lot of the you know…other offensive gifts the freshman have and players that came back have worked on and brought to the table this year.”
This year’s Hurricanes are attempting to make the NCAA Tournament in back to back seasons for the third time in school history. The first two times it happened were when they made three straight NCAA Tournaments under Leonard Hamilton from 1998-2000.
The Success they have had under Larranaga appears to have staying power even after he retires. Hamilton left Miami after the 2000 season to coach the Washington Wizards. He would only last one season with a 19-63 record.
The Hurricanes also have a chance to match Hamilton’s six consecutive seasons above .500 this season. Under Larranaga, those expectations should be far higher every season.
