Finnish 7-footer Markkanen signs with No. 12 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) No. 12 Arizona has signed 7-foot forward Lauri Markkanen from Finland to its 2016-17 freshman class.

Markkanen of Helsinki is an athletic forward who can shoot from the outside or play with his back to the basket. He played for Finland in the FIBA Under-16 European Championships and led all scorers in the 2015 Under-18 championships with 18.2 points per game while adding 6.3 rebounds.

Markkanen is the son of Pekka Markkanen, a former Kansas player who played professionally in Finland and on the country's national team.
