Lonergan had been under investigation since July for allegedly verbally and emotionally abusing his players.
Back in July, The Washington Post chronicled the problems, reporting that 13 players had transferred from George Washington in Lonergan’s five seasons as coach. In addition, the school fielded multiple complaints about his behavior, with one player from last year’s team visiting a Title IX coordinator to complain about Lonergan. That player’s written complaint, from The Post:
In five seasons at George Washington, Lonergan went 97-70 with one NCAA Tournament appearance during the 2013-14 season. The Colonials won the NIT Tournament this past April. Lonergan previously coached for six seasons at Vermont, going 126-68 with one trip to the NCAA Tournament (2010).
