Georgetown announcer yells 'Hoyas win' 19 times after comeback victory
Georgetown trailed Creighton by 11 with only five minutes to go in regulation.
But the Hoyas rallied in the final three minutes, closing out the game on a 15-3 run to pick up a crucial 74-73 win over the Bluejays on Tuesday night.
Georgetown senior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, who scored seven points the run, sunk a pair of free throws to put the Hoyas up one with 6.2 seconds left. Creighton's James Milliken went coast-to-coast, but his game-winning attempt was off the mark. Rich Chvotkin, the longtime Georgetown play-by-play announcer, celebrated the come-from-behind win by shouting, "Hoyas win!" not once, not twice, but 19 times.
Smith-Rivera finished with 19 points for Georgetown. Maurice Watson Jr., led Creighton with 16 points and eight rebounds and seven assists.
Georgetown and Creighton were two of four Big East teams to enter Tuesday tied for second place in the conference standings. The win improves the Hoyas' record to 6-2 in league. Along with Xavier, they trail Villanova by one game.
"They're all big," Georgetown head coach John Thompson III said after the game. "You're not quite at the halfway point, but if you look at our league, which is the most difficult league in the country, everyone is good, everyone can beat everyone top to bottom, so every game is the big game. Coming off a loss to Connecticut on Saturday, it's your next game, it's a big game. Saturday is going to be a big game."
Georgetown hosts No. 10 Providence on Saturday night at 8 p.m. on FS1.
