Georgetown forward Ismael Massoud to miss 6-8 weeks with broken hand
NEW YORK — Georgetown senior forward Ismael Massoud suffered a broken hand in the Hoyas' closed scrimmage on Saturday against Pittsburgh and will be out roughly 6-8 weeks, sources told FOX Sports.
The 6-foot-9 forward, who transferred from Kansas State to Georgetown for his fifth season of college basketball, served in a reserve role on the Wildcats' Elite Eight team last year. Most notably, he delivered 15 points off the bench in Kansas State's Sweet 16 win over Michigan State last season.
Massoud left Saturday's scrimmage with his hand in a soft splint, with further testing revealing the broken hand.
This setback comes as a significant blow to a Georgetown team that was already projected in the back half of the Big East standings and is lacking size and depth, as former Providence coach Ed Cooley enters his first year at the helm.
A best case scenario could be a return by the end of November for Massoud, but the situation is fluid. The Hoyas could use his presence for the start of December when their schedule levels up with TCU on Dec. 2 (5:30 p.m. ET, FS1) and Syracuse on Dec. 9 (11:30 a.m. ET, FOX).
Cooley's team opens the season on Nov. 7 against Le Moyne (7 p.m. ET, FS2).
