Thompson guided the Hoyas to a 14-18 record this season after a 15-18 finish in 2015-16. He was 278-151 in 13 seasons at Georgetown, and he took the Hoyas to the NCAA tournament in eight of those seasons, including to the Final Four in 2007. However, Georgetown missed the tournament in three of the past four seasons.

Thompson, who began his coaching career with Princeton in 2000, was unable to duplicate the success of his father, who coached the Hoyas from 1972-1998 and won a national championship in 1984.
