Georgia Southern tops SC Upstate 84-80 in Palmetto Shootout
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) Tookie Brown scored the last two of his 16 points from the free-throw line with :03 left to secure an 84-80 Georgia Southern win over South Carolina Upstate Friday afternoon in the Palmetto State Shootout.
Mike Cunningham hit a 3-pointer with just under three minutes to pull SC Upstate even at 76-76, but Mike Hughes and Ike Smith each converted two free throws and Smith added a jumper with :09 left to make it 82-78.
Jake Allsmiller led Georgia Southern with 18 points off the Eagles' bench and Smith added another 17 points.
Deion Holmes led SC Upstate with 22 points, with Jure Span and Jacob Schulte each adding 11 points and Marvin Smith pulling down 10 rebounds.
Georgia Southern (2-3) faces Bob Jones University on Monday.
The winless Spartans (0-6) play The Citadel Saturday and finish the tournament against Toccoa Falls Monday.
