2017 point guard Jose Alvarado committed to the Yellow Jackets on Thursday. He took an official visit to Georgia Tech on August 18th and just recently announced his final three schools a week ago.

Alvarado was known to be choosing between Georgia Tech, Rutgers and Seton Hall. The Scarlet Knights and Pirates were reportedly making the point guard their top priority.

Seton Hall could’ve used some help at the lead guard spot in 2017 after losing Isaiah Whitehead to the draft this past season. Rutgers is trying to rebuild their program under former Stony Brook head coach Steve Pikiell.

The Brooklyn native is a considered a three star point guard by both ESPN and 247 sports. He steps in at 6’0″, 160 pounds. He’s a small point guard who will benefit from having another year in high school before playing in the ACC. He’ll finish up his final year of school at Christ The King Regional in Middle Village, New York.

Alvarado is a good base for Pastner to build upon for the coming years. Any recruit that is considered a three star or higher by major websites is a win for a coach.

Alvarado is incredibly tough despite his small stature. He needs to use his final year in high school to gain about ten to fifteen pounds and improve his jump shot, but there is no doubting his leadership skills, confidence and passion. When he gets to Georgia Tech next summer, he’ll be able to add more weight and then he will be able to comfortably compete against ACC guards.

Alvarado is very competitive as well which will feed into the winning nature that Georgia Tech needs to get back to. He won’t be a guy who can step in and fill all the holes the Yellow Jackets currently possess, but he is a look into the future of what Pastner is building.
