PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Tyler Geving has been dismissed after eight seasons as head coach of the Portland State Vikings.

Geving had two years left on his contract, the school said on Wednesday. The Vikings went 15-16 overall and 7-11 in the Big Sky Conference this past season.

''Coach Geving did outstanding work in recruiting great student-athletes and changing the culture of academic success amongst the team. These decisions are always difficult, and especially in this case due to the outstanding character of Coach Geving'' athletic director Valerie Cleary said in a statement.

Before taking over for the 2009-10 season, Geving was an assistant at Portland State under former coach Ken Bone for four seasons.

He went 112-133 as the Vikings' head coach with three appearances in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals.

Cleary said the search for a new head coach would begin immediately.
