Guy's 21 lead No. 18 Virginia past Lehigh 75-54 (Dec 02, 2017)
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Kyle Guy didn't allow five stitches in his shooting hand to slow him down.
Playing with a protective wrap on his hand after cutting it in practice on Friday, Guy scored 21 points and No. 18 Virginia never trailed in a 75-54 victory against Lehigh on Saturday. Isaiah Wilkins added 14 points and Devon Hall had 11 for the Cavaliers (8-0).
Virginia led 39-23 at halftime and by as many as 23 in the second half.
Guy played just 24 minutes but matched his career high with five 3-pointers. He also had three steals.
''He was moving well. He's developed the ability to put it on the floor,'' Virginia coach Tony Bennett said.
Lehigh coach Brett Reed was impressed.
''He has an unbelievably quick release and he's able to turn and square his body in the air extremely well,'' Reed said.
Lance Tejada made five of Lehigh's 10 3-pointers and scored 22 points. The Mountain Hawks (4-4) shot just 40 percent (19-47) and committed a season-high 17 turnovers leading to 24 points for Virginia.
The Cavaliers led 22-16 before using a 15-3 run to gain some separation late in the first half. Hall finished the burst with a 3-pointer, making it 37-19. The Mountain Hawks got no closer than 13 in the second half.
BIG PICTURE
Lehigh: The Mountain Hawks need everything to go right in a matchup with a Power Five school and didn't have that kind of day against Virginia. Kyle Leufroy, their third-leading scorer with a 12.7 points per game average, didn't score at all and missed his only shot in 20 minutes.
Virginia: The Cavaliers not only play tough defense, but they are very careful with the ball. They had just six turnovers against Lehigh and have yet to allow a team to make 50 percent of its shots this season.
''Our formula doesn't change. We've got to take care of the ball and get good shots every time we play,'' Bennett said.
HUFF SIGHTING
Jay Huff played 12 minutes for Virginia after not budging from the bench the last two games. He had five points and three rebounds.
''He practiced well the last few days and that's why I used him.'' Bennett said of the 7-footer. ''That's important.''
