GW parts ways with men's basketball coach Maurice Joseph

WASHINGTON (AP) — George Washington is parting ways with men's basketball coach Maurice Joseph after three seasons.

Athletic director Tanya Vogel announced Friday that Joseph would not return. She says the school will conduct a national search for his replacement.

George Washington went 44-57 under Joseph, including 9-24 this season. The Colonials lost in the second round of the Atlantic 10 conference tournament Thursday to local rival George Mason.

Joseph took over in 2016 after previous coach Mike Lonergan was fired for what the school called "conduct inconsistent with the university's values." Lonergan coached GW for five seasons, leading it to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and winning the NIT in 2016.

Vogel called it a difficult day to move on from Joseph but said it was necessary because the team was not reaching its full potential on the court.
