Illinois Basketball: Adam Miller Would Continue Stability in 2020

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Recruiting is the key to future success of the Illinois basketball team.

The Illini continued to prove that on Friday as they decided to offer class of 2020 point guard Adam Miller a scholarship.

The name of the game in recruiting seems to be getting to these players as early as possible and offering them a scholarship to show how loyal the coach is to that player.

A lot of recruits seem to like that and that has been one of John Groce’s specialties in his time with the Illini.  That is why the class of 2017 has become so special.

This trend continued with Miller.  He has been offered a scholarship and is going to be an important part of this program in the future.

Miller is currently 6-foot tall and I am assuming he will continue to grow so you never know what position he will play in college.  But, right now he is listed as a point guard because of his great handle.

One of the angles that Groce can take in the recruitment of Miller is the pipeline through Peoria Manuel that the Illini have had over the years.

Manuel has produced great players like Frank Williams and now the class of 2017 is bringing in Frankie’s son, Da’Monte.

Illinois needs to have success with Da’Monte so that in turn will help recruit Miller to come to Champaign.

I know Miller is still pretty young, but there are some things I love about this kid.

First and foremost, Miller’s passing abilities and ball handling are through the roof.  He has the ability to fool defenders into thinking he is going one way but then he goes opposite just based off his dribbling.

Miller has a great ability to find the open man as well.  He draws such attention down the court and this enables him to scan to see where the open man is and then he can dish it on a dime.

While Miller is still extremely young, I think he has talent that many big programs will be vying for.  The great thing for Illinois is that he is right in the Illini’s backyard.

When 2020 rolls around, the Illini will also have a decent amount of room on their team as well.

The only point guard Illinois has on their roster for 2020 would be Trent Frazier.  He would be a senior that season.

In 2018 or 2019, Illinois is likely to bring in another point guard.  Whether it is Ayo Dosunmu in 2018 or Tyger Campbell or Marquise Walker in 2019, I think the Illini land one of these talented players.

So, realistically, the Illini will have one more year left for Frazier if he is a four-year point guard.  After that, Illinois will need Miller to continue the stable point guard rotation.

I know there is still a lot of time, but Miller will be an important piece for Illinois to continue their winning ways.  Of course, that is assuming they start winning this season.

It is never too early to start recruiting for the future.  Groce proved that this past week with Miller and hopefully this turns into a commitment down the road.
