Illinois Basketball: Illini Offer Scholarship to Kenny Wooten

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Illinois basketball team seems to be down to just a few targeted recruits for the class of 2017.

Some of the main names left for fans to look for included Abu Kigab, Kris Wilkes, and Mayan Kiir.  But, are these the only three that the Illini are still targeting?

Today, it was announced by Josh Gershon of Scout, that John Groce and the Illini have offered forward Kenny Wooten a scholarship for 2017.

This is an interesting offer considering Illinois only has two scholarships available and they are reported to be hot on the trail for most of the recruits I have named.

Wooten originally committed to Nevada to play basketball back on November 23, 2015.  He even signed a letter of intent that day and was all set.

But, like most natural human beings, Wooten changed his mind almost a year into his commitment.  He decided to reopen his recruitment back up on September 24 of this year.

Wooten isn’t a player that will completely change a program, but he is a player that could spell some minutes and create depth.

247Sports lists Wooten as a 3-star forward who is the No. 227 player in the class of 2017 and the No. 22 player in the state of California.

Wooten is listed as a 6-foot-8, 205-pound, forward who is from California but transferred down to Las Vegas, Nevada to play for Trinity Christian.

I like what Wooten would bring off the bench for the Illini.  He is a super athletic player who is good at defense and hustles.

Wooten can run the court and create turnovers.  That would be huge if Illinois needed a defensive stop late in games.

Having a player like Wooten would boost the entire team’s defensive performance and he would give energy to the second rotation.

Some areas that Wooten needs to work on is his post-game and shooting.  Right now he is a rim protector but he can’t be a liability at the offensive end.

I think this would come with time, though.  He is really raw and with time and coaching that would form into a great basketball player.

This is an interesting offer, to say the least.  I am intrigued how these final two scholarships will fall in the next six months or so.
