Lamar beats Nicholls 87-75 to secure Southland berth (Mar 02, 2017)

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) Lincoln Davis sank four 3-pointers and had 23 points to lead Lamar to an 87-75 win over Nicholls on Thursday night and secure a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament.

Nick Garth added 13 points, Colton Weisbrod and Zjori Bosha had 12 apiece and Joey Frenchwood dished out 10 assists to help Lamar (17-13, 9-8) reach the conference tournament for the first time since winning the title in the 2011-12 season.

Lamar overtook Nicholls (14-16, 7-10) for good during a 10-0 run capped with Bosha's 3-point play to make it 36-30 with 2:32 left before intermission. Davis hit a 3-pointer to open the second half and spark a 9-3 spurt that stretched Lamar's advantage to 53-38 and the Cardinals led by double figures the rest of the way.

Jahvaughn Powell led Nicholls with 24 points, Johnathan Bell added 19 points and Liam Thomas and Lafayette Rutledge had 12 each. Thomas also had 11 rebounds.
