Louisville Basketball: Donovan Mitchell season preview

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Louisville basketball’s Donovan Mitchell is set to become a star in his second season under Rick Pitino.

Donovan Mitchell is one of the most exciting basketball players that have come through the Louisville basketball program over the past couple of years. Cardinal fans have seen many players over the years who can dunk, but this guy can go up and throw it down like no one else in college basketball.

Mitchell will have a larger role on this 2016-2017 team, as Louisville looks to make it back to the NCAA tournament after missing one year due to a self-imposed postseason ban. The Cardinals have a ton of talent on this year’s squad and Mitchell is at the forefront.

Speaking of thunderous dunks, here is Mitchell’s one-handed slam against Syracuse last season in the KFC Yum Center courtesy of the ACC Network:

Here is what Jeff Greer from the Courier-Journal had to say about Mitchell back in August:

“There’s reason behind the expectations for Mitchell, who came to Louisville as a five-star, top-20 prospect (on Scout.com) and showed flashes of his potential as a freshman. He isn’t playing behind Trey Lewis now, and he and Adel will be given the keys to Louisville’s offensive scoring load, with Snider setting the table.

Mitchell’s weight loss should help him on the defensive end, and his jump-shooting work can only enhance an already strong offensive game. He is not lacking in confidence, either, which sets him up to have a breakout sophomore season. The Cards will go as far as he and Adel take them.”

Fans should be really excited to see what Donovan Mitchell can bring to the table in 2016-2017. He is always one of the most athletic players on the floor, which should play into Louisville’s favor of playing more aggressive on the defensive end this season.

The Cards kick of their first scrimmage of the season tomorrow night in the KFC Yum Center.
