Maryland Basketball: Melo Trimble named to Bob Cousy Award watch list
Melo Trimble is back for another season in College Park.
On Monday, the Maryland guard was named to the Bob Cousy Award watch list. The award annually honors the top point guard in college basketball.
Phoenix Suns and former Kentucky guard Tyler Ulis won the award last season.
In addition to Trimble, Seth Allen (Virginia Tech), Joel Berry II (North Carolina), Markelle Fultz (Washington), and Frank Jackson (Duke) were also named to the list. Allen spent the first two years of his collegiate career with the Terrapins before becoming a Hokie.
The list consists of 20 players and will be cut down later this season. Trimble made the original list during both his freshman and sophomore seasons, but never made the final cut of five plays.
Trimble is coming off a season in which he averaged 14.8 points, 4.9 assists, and 3.6 rebounds for the Terps. The former Bishop O’Connell (Va.) star also shot 41 percent from the field.
The junior guard is expected to be the team’s star point guard once again. However, Trimble is going to play off the ball at times with freshman Anthony Cowan joining the team.
Early reports have suggested that Cowan has really been pushing Trimble hard in practice. Cowan lining up at point guard will help take some of the pressure off Trimble and allow him to be more of a scorer that he’s been in the past.
Trimble was forced to be the floor general a large majority of the time last season. The injury to Dion Wiley really limited Mark Turgeon’s guard rotation.
The star Terp guard really has the ability to have the best season of his collegiate career this coming season. His decision to return to College Park could prove to be the best possible one for a player that hasn’t even reached his potential yet.
