Maryland Basketball: Terps get past Seahawks with ease
After coming through with a close win down the road in Washington D.C., Mark Turgeon and the Maryland basketball team were looking to find a rhythm against Saint Mary’s (Md.).
The Terrapins cruised from the opening tip as they handily defeated the Seahawks 93-45 on Thursday evening.
Center Damonte Dodd followed up a strong performance against Georgetown with a 13-point, 10-rebound effort. Forward L.G. Gill added 15 points and three rebounds for Maryland.
Turgeon started the game Anthony Cowan, Melo Trimble, Kevin Huerter, Justin Jackson, and Dodd. He would go the rest of the first half swapping that five with Jaylen Brantley, Jared Nickens, Dion Wiley, Gill, and Ivan Bender in shifts like a hockey game.
It was the first time since Jan. 25, 2015 when Turgeon started Michal Cekovsky, Nickens, and Trimble against Northwestern.
When asked about this rotation, Turgeon said not to expect the platoon system really at all this year.
“The players hate that, I hated it as a a player,” Turgeon said. He told players at halftime he would rotate players around.
Cowan furthered his magnificent start by kicking off this game with two points and two steals in the first minute of the game. Maryland jumped out to a 13-2 lead, essentially putting away Saint Mary’s under four minutes into the game.
Maryland did not feel much pressure from the Divison III Seahawks throughout the course of the game.
As of halftime, Maryland had 10 scorers, led by Dodd with 10 points and seven rebounds. Maryland led 54-22 and just continued to put away Saint Mary’s in the second half.
Dodd would end up securing his first career double-double. Six of those rebounds came on the offensive end, which is something Maryland certainly can get used to.
This was one of the few games all season where the Terps could impose their will on the glass their opponent as they racked up 22 offensive rebounds.
Trimble was quiet in this game just with seven points and a steal. Turgeon mentioned he wasn’t in after a long game on Tuesday night. The former Bishop O’Connell (Va.) standout played just 15 minutes, which was the lowest of anybody aside from the walk-ons.
Maryland did just what many thought they would in a blowout victory. The Terps are next in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host Towson.
