Maryland coach after 129-point win: '(We) didn't play the scoreboard'

The Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians played a game to remember on Wednesday. The Maryland women's basketball team and Bluefield State played one that should be forgotten, and never should have happened.

Final score No. 6 Maryland 146, Bluefield State 17.

That'll teach Bluefield State for having the gall to take a 3-2 lead when Big Blues freshman guard Maggie Tien hit from outside the arc.

These preseason "exhibitions" tend not to end well but this mismatch seem punitive for Bluefield State, which committed 51 turnovers.

Per the Baltimore Sun:

They went at least 2-23 last season (no record of their final schedule exists) and their regular-season finale on the road was canceled because of "scheduling conflicts." OK.

The score at the end of a quarter was 40-9. It was 74-17 at the half.

You don't have to be a math major to realize that the 17 points Bluefield had at halftime is the same number it finished the game with. The Big Blues had the blues as Maryland ended the game on a 78-0 run as part of a 72-0 second half.

James Crabtree-Hannigan covered the brutality for The Diamondback:

More from Crabtree-Hannigan:

The Terps shot 64 percent from the field and 46.4 percent from three-point range. Maryland had 82 points in the paint, boosted by fast-break layups after (some) of its 35 steals.

Two of those points in the paint came at the buzzer entering halftime on a putback from freshman center Jenna Staiti. The shot gave the Terps a 74-17 lead at the break, and Staiti was mobbed by three of her teammates, who hit her with towels as she tried to walk to the locker room.

"I loved our energy and our enthusiasm," coach Brenda Frese said. "[We] didn't play the scoreboard, but really competed."
