Mathis' 3 at the buzzer sends New Mexico past CSUN 87-84

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (AP) — Anthony Mathis scored 12 points and banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer and New Mexico beat Cal State Northridge 87-84 on Tuesday in the season opener for both teams.

Makuach Maluach's layup put the Lobos up 84-80 with 34 seconds left. Cameron Gottfried responded with a layup four seconds later. After a timeout, Elijah Harkless came up with a steal, and Lamine Diane hit a jumper in the lane to tie it for the Matadors with six second left. The Lobos called a timeout and set up Mathis' game winner.

Corey Manigault led the Lobos with 16 points and Maluach and Dane Kuiper each scored 15.

Diane scored 34 points and to lead the Matadors and Terrell Gomez scored 21 as the two combined to make 23 of their team's 33 field goals.
