Michigan State Recruiting: Spartans in 5-star SG Gary Trent Jr.'s top 3

Michigan State recruiting made the top three for five-star 2017 shooting guard Gary Trent Jr.

Tom Izzo has been a wizard over the last couple of years when it comes to Michigan State recruiting. He has been pulling in some of the nation’s best talent in surprising fashion, and five-star shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. is the next on his list.

While Izzo has his eye on a couple of big names like Nojel Eastern, Brian Bowen and Brandon McCoy, Trent Jr. is one who would shock everyone if he chose the green and white.

However, he has the Spartans in his top three.

That’s big news for Michigan State, especially since the Spartans beat out the likes of Kentucky, Kansas, Ohio State and Arizona to make the cut. He has ties to Columbus, Ohio, so making the list over the Buckeyes was huge.

Reigning from Apple Valley, Minn., Trent Jr. went to the same high school as former Duke point guard Tyus Jones who helped to lead the Blue Devils to the national title. That gives Duke somewhat of a leg up in his recruitment — Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils are perceived as the favorites to land him.

However, the Spartans are in his top three even before he has taken his official visit to East Lansing, which will happen on Oct. 13. If Izzo and the team can sway him even a little, that would be a major win.

Trent Jr. hasn’t really gotten a close look at what Michigan State has to offer and he could be playing for the national champions next season if he picks MSU.

Just imagine a recruiting class with Bowen, Xavier Tillman, Jaren Jackson Jr., Trent Jr., Eastern and McCoy set to join Miles Bridges, Cassius Winston, Josh Langford and Nick Ward. That is a scary-athletic team.
