The second year head coach has gained a commitment from 2017 four-star point guard Nick Weatherspoon. The 6’2″, 190 pound native of Camden, Miss chose the Bulldogs over offers from Georgetown, Kansas, Indiana, Iowa State, LSU, North Carolina and Ohio State, amongst others.

Weatherspoon is the brother of Quinndary, who is Mississippi State’s sophomore shooting guard and one of the leaders of their young roster.

The 2017 prospect is ranked 34th in ESPN’s top 100, is labeled as the ninth best point guard in the class and is the best player in the state of Mississippi.

The Velma Jackson Magnet High School product rose onto the scene during this summer, as he averaged 23.4 points per game on the Adidas Gauntlet. He proved himself to be an dynamic scorer, using his athleticism and quick first step to get into the lane, and a guard who can play both on and off the ball.

He loves to attack the rim and drive the ball to the basket, but he has developed into a solid pull up shooter in the mid-range and an improving three point shooter. Weatherspoon’s creativity is impressive for his age, as he can separate from defenders with ease.

Weatherspoon can be a strong defender at the college level due to his aggressiveness, quickness, size and athletic ability.

However, at this point in his career, Weatherspoon is a much better offensive player. His shot selection is a bit shaky, but if he is able to find a balance between being a true point guard and getting his own buckets, Weatherspoon could have a profound impact in the SEC.

Meanwhile, Mississippi State is flexing their muscles on the recruiting trail.

Even though five-star talent Malik Newman is gone (he transferred to Kansas because he wasn’t happy with his role), Howland has reeled in eight combined four-star recruits in two classes (2015 and 2016), one five-star recruit (Newman) and two three stars talents.

This year alone, Howland has six four-star recruits, including Mario Kegler, Schnider Herard, Eli Wright, Abdulhakim Ado, Tyson Carter and Lamar Peters. Add Weatherspoon in 2017, and the Bulldogs seem to be a rising program in the SEC.

With Howland in Starkville, it looks like the Bulldogs are set for years. Now, they just have to transfer the talent into wins.
