Northwestern's plan to reach the program's first-ever NCAA tournament took a hit on Wednesday morning, as the school announced that sophomore forward Vic Law will undergo season-ending surgery.

Law tore the labrum in his left shoulder. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 7.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game (19 starts) for the Wildcats last season.

"We're certainly disappointed for Vic," said Northwestern head coach Chris Collins said in a statement. "He dedicated himself and made great progress during this offseason, and had a great summer and preseason on the court. I have no doubt that his attitude toward recovery and improvement will be relentless and that he will continue to be a tremendous teammate. We expect a full recovery in 4-6 months and Vic remains a foundational piece of our program for the future." .

Northwestern hosts UMass Lowell on Friday night.
