Notre Dame Basketball: Persistence lands 2017 jewel
Notre Dame basketball landed their first recruit for the class of 2017 after patience and persistence.
Mike Brey and Notre Dame picked up their main target of the summer and their first recruit in the class of 2017 in forward D.J. Harvey. He is a four-star recruit and the 47th overall player in the ESPN top 100.
Brey allegedly had the leg up considering he attended DeMatha Catholic, the same high school that Harvey is currently playing at. Harvey has played alongside notable Washington Huskies player Markelle Fultz the past couple of years.
Harvey was believed to be considering Alabama, UConn and Texas, in addition to Notre Dame. He had just finished an official visit with Alabama this past weekend, but elected to take his talents to South Bend and play in the ACC.
Harvey visited the Fighting Irish during the weekend of September 10, and had an in-home visit with the staff the night before his commitment.
While this is Notre Dame’s first addition in 2017, it’s surely not expected to be their last as players will almost certainly want to play with Harvey.
Harvey steps in at 6-foot-6, 205 pounds and will likely play small forward in college.
With sharp shooter V.J. Beachem graduating after this season, the team is going to need someone to step in and take over immediately. Harvey could be that guy as he uses his size to his advantage both offensively and defensively.
Despite struggling with his shot over the last year or so, Harvey can knock down jumpers from long range. During the EYBL circuit, the Maryland native averaged 10.3 points and 6.8 boards per contest. He’s got great athleticism and an ability to impact the game in more ways than just scoring.
Harvey is a guy that Notre Dame will expect to be on campus for at least two seasons. He’s a guy who is fit to lead the offense and while he won’t be able to do it alone, he’ll certainly make an impact.
