Ole Miss Basketball: Rebels Looking to Salvage Season Early

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 9:45 p.m. ET

The Ole Miss basketball team had high expectations to begin the season, but now the Rebels have to get things back on track if they expect to make the tournament.

These past two weeks were absolutely huge for the Ole Miss basketball team. The Rebels faced Memphis, Middle Tennessee, and Virginia Tech, all elite teams that could be top 100 RPI victories come season’s end.

Ole Miss went 1-2 in those games, defeating Memphis, the worst of the three.

The Rebels will have to start making improvements if they expect to compete for an NCAA tournament bid in March.

Senior Sebastian Saiz has been playing well, but outside of him, the rest of the team has struggled.

Cullen Neal has been a point of strain for Ole Miss, especially on the defensive side.

Turnovers have been a killer for the Rebels this season, plaguing them in nearly every game this season.

Also, when will the Rebels face a team that is not red-hot from the field? It seems like every game Ole Miss is playing a team that has a player shooting 50% on the day.

Is it a scheme issue for Ole Miss? Is perimeter defense that bad for Ole Miss? I do not know.

This year feels like a learning year for the Ole Miss basketball team, and that next year’s team will be the one to make the tournament run.

Which is fine for Ole Miss, as they will be adding Devontae Shuler and Jamarko Pickett to the team next season, as well as Dominik Olejniczak.

Ole Miss has the pieces to make a run this year, but will have to improve chemistry and learn to take down the turnovers.
