Oregon State Basketball: Malcolm Duvivier out for season due to personal issues
Oregon State basketball loses depth in the backcourt with Malcolm Duvivier done for year.
The Oregon State Beavers made their first NCAA Tournament since 1990 last season. Without Gary Payton II in 2016-17, it was expected to be awfully difficult for Wayne Tinkle’s squad to return to March’s grand event.
Now, it will prove to be even more grueling to earn a berth in the Big Dance, as the Oregon State Beavers lost their most experienced guard, senior Malcolm Duvivier, for the season.
The 6’2″ Toronto, Ontario native only averaged 6.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 25.3 minutes per game in 2015-16. He shot 38 percent from the field and 36 percent from beyond the arc.
His numbers actually decreased from his sophomore season to his junior campaign. In 2014-15, Duvivier put up 10.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in almost 35 minutes per game. He wasn’t as efficient from the field overall and from three, but he attempted 57 more free throws and shot a much better percentage from the charity stripe.
Regardless, Duvivier is one of two seniors on Oregon State’s roster and has been through the gauntlet that is the Pac-12 Conference. The Canada native was being counted on as a leader of a very young backcourt and as an important depth piece.
Tinkle will now have to rely on sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. (the team’s third leading scorer last year) and two freshman, JaQuori McLaughlin and Ronnie Stacy, to hold down the fort at the guard positions.
On the bright side, the Beavers still have an intriguing front court that consists of Tres Tinkle, JUCO prospect Keondre Dew and Drew Eubanks. The Beavers won’t be a bottom feeder in the Pac-12 with three of their top five scorers returning, but they will have difficulty reaching their ultimate goal.
In the mean time, we hope everything is OK off the court for Duvivier.
