Oregon State player is tossed after apparently tripping referee
Staring down a referee is one thing, but knocking him down?
Oregon State senior forward Jarmal Reid, unhappy with a no-call by official Tommy Nunez late in a game at Utah Sunday night, stuck out his leg and tripped the ref as Nunez ran up the court. OK, we'll say Reid apparently tripped the ref, because that's what we're supposed to say. But just look at the video above.
We'll call it a hokey-pokey play -- Reid stuck his right leg out. That's what it's all about.
After stealing the ball from Utah's Jakob Poeltl, Reid tried dribbling. But a lunging Poeltl seemed to bump Reid, and the Beavers forward fell to the floor. Reid stared at Nunez after there was no whistle.
Reid was given a flagrant-2 foul and ejected. Oregon State lost 59-53.
Folks on Twitter found it pretty flagrant, too.
Except for those who liked it.
According to the school, Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle announced on Monday that Reid has been suspended at least four games.
“We are obviously very disappointed and apologize to everyone involved,” Tinkle said. “Our university and our program do not condone this type of conduct on or off the court. We acted swiftly and severely, but also fairly with the understanding that we are dealing with a 22-year-old young man that we need to help grow through this tough situation."
“Jarmal’s conduct and attitude in the next two weeks will determine whether any further action is warranted beyond the four-game suspension.”
In an apology, Reid called his actions "inexcusable."
