Petrie's 3-point play puts Lafayette over La Salle 77-76
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Alex Petrie sank a layup in the final seconds to tie it, was fouled and made the free throw for the win as Lafayette edged La Salle 77-76 on Saturday.
The Leopards (1-1) trailed 76-74 with ten seconds to play when Petrie drove inside for the tying basket, drawing the foul. He then made good from the line, giving Lafayette the lead. La Salle's Pookie Powell missed a 3-pointer at the other end as time expired.
Myles Cherry led with 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Leopards. Kyle Stout added 14 points and Petrie and Justin Jaworski each had 13.
Lafayette trailed by a slim margin through most of the first half and was behind 37-34 at the break.
In the second half, Petrie drained a 3-pointer and Cherry followed with a layup to give the Leopards a 54-52 edge with 12:01 to play but La Salle battled back to lead 75-73 with 1:55 remaining.
Powell scored 26 points with six rebounds for the Explorers (0-2).
