Report: George Washington basketball players accuse coach of verbal abuse

A Washington Post investigation published Thursday revealed that 13 men’s basketball players have transferred from George Washington University in coach Mike Lonergan’s five years on the job and used anonymous quotes from players and former players to paint a picture of an “offensive, uncomfortable environment” within the program.

George Washington was 10-21 in Lonergan’s first season and 13-17 in his second, but the school went to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and has won at least 22 games in each of the past three seasons. This season, the Colonials won the NIT.

The Post, however, detailed an atmosphere that included verbal abuse.

One former staffer explained the reason for all the transfers.

GWU officials declined to answer whether the issues had been investigated, and Lonergan responded to the story with a statement:
