Report: Larry Brown mulling HS coaching job in New York
Larry Brown is a basketball lifer. That can be the only way to explain why the now 76-year-old, who once coached the Philadelphia 76ers in one of the many stops on his career coaching caravan, is mulling a job as a high school coach.
Brown, who turnd 76 on Wednesday, spoke to the Kansas City Star and revealed he could be interested in taking on a new challenge: Working with teens at a school in East Hampton, N.Y.
“There’s a high school in East Hampton (N.Y.) where I’m currently staying. I’m going to speak to the AD there,” said Brown, who indicated the opening is for head coach.
“If I do that, I can’t do it halfway. They told me I can still speak and go to colleges, but I don’t want to cheat the kids. So if I’m going to do it, I’ll do it 100 percent. I’ve got so much I’ve been taught from players (he worked with) and coaches I played for. I just want to share it somehow.”
If the goal is to complete a full circle, it would certainly fit the bill. The Brooklyn-born Brown attended Long Beach HS in New York.
His coaching resume includes no less than 14 stops, the most recent of which was at SMU, where he exited after last season.
“I can’t retire,” Brown told The Star. “I didn’t handle it (not working) well after Charlotte (fired him in 2011). I was so lucky that SMU (hired him in 2013). … First, Stanford offered me a job but I was afraid to move, which was dumb. I landed on my feet having the chance at SMU. I just think I need to be doing something and contributing in some way.”
