Rutgers suspends leading scorer Corey Sanders

Published Feb. 15, 2016 4:28 p.m. ET

Freshman guard Corey Sanders, one of the bright spots in another long Rutgers season, was suspended by head coach Eddie Jordan on Monday for violation of team rules.

Sanders will miss the next four games for the Scarlet Knights beginning on Tuesday when they play at Illinois.

"Although I am disappointed to announce this suspension, I believe that it will serve as a valuable learning experience for Corey," Jordan said in a statement. "The team will continue to work hard in his absence and looks forward to his return."

The 6-foot-2 lead guard, a consensus four-star recruit in the Class of 2015, leads Rutgers with 16.2 points and 4.1 assists in 33.5 minutes per game.

Sanders is set to return to the lineup on March 2 when Rutgers hosts Michigan State.

Rutgers has a 6-19 (0-12 Big Ten) record entering this four-game stretch without Sanders.
