Saint Peter's beats Rider 73-61 to open MAAC play

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (AP) Antwon Portley scored 25 points on Wednesday night, and Saint Peter's beat Rider 73-61 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Portley, a freshman, surpassed 20 points for the third time in his six games with Saint Peter's (2-4). He shot 10 of 15, including 5 of 9 from the arc, sinking his first 3-pointer 1:13 into the game to give the Peacocks the lead for good after they conceded the opening basket to Rider (1-6).

Trevis Wyche added 11 points for Saint Peter's, which opened with a 15-6 run on its way to a 30-23 halftime lead. Portley scored seven straight as a part of a 9-0 run early in the second half that put the Peacocks up 48-29. Rider got no closer than the final score.

Teddy Okereafor led the Broncs with 17 points. Kealen Ives and Jimmie Taylor added 11.
