San Diego holds off Long Beach St. for 74-70 win

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Olin Carter III scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half and San Diego hit all of its eight free-throw attempts in the final two minutes to beat Long Beach State 74-70 on Saturday night.

Isaiah Pineiro and Tyler Williams added 17 points apiece and Isaiah Wright had 11 points and six assists for San Diego. Williams hit 5 of 8 from 3-point range and Pineiro grabbed nine rebounds.

Carter scored the first nine points before Williams hit back-to-back 3s to cap a 15-0 run that gave San Diego (6-2) a 10-point lead — the biggest by either team — with 11:41 to play. After the teams traded baskets, Long Beach State (2-7) scored 12 of the next 18 points to pull within four and KJ Byers capped a 7-0 spurt that made it 66-all with two minutes to play. Pineiro, Carter and Wright combined to make 8 of 8 from the free-throw line from there to seal it.

Temidayo Yussuf had a career-best 28 points on 10-of-13 shooting and Edon Maxhuni scored a season-high 19 for LBSU.

San Diego hit 10 3-pointers and made 14 of 16 foul shots. The 49ers shot just 4 of 15 (27 percent) from 3-point range.
