Saunders leads Wagner over Mount St. Mary's 58-56
EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) — Romone Saunders drove the length of the court in the final five seconds and scored at the hoop as time ran out to give Wagner a 58-56 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.
Vado Morse hit a 3-pointer to tie the game before Saunders escaped a double team on the inbounds and raced down the court for the winning points.
Saunders finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Saunders, the Seahawks' leading scorer for the season at 17 points per game, shot only 14 percent in the game (2 of 14).
Nigel Jackson had 10 points for Wagner (13-12, 8-6 Northeast Conference). Devin Liggeons added 10 points and eight rebounds. Elijah Davis had 10 rebounds for the visitors.
The Seahawks were in trouble after the first half, entering the locker room at the half trailing 32-22. But the road team mounted a second-half rally to get back in it and ultimately earn the slim victory. The Mountaineers' 24 points in the second half were a season low for the team.
Morse had 23 points for the Mountaineers (7-20, 4-10). Jalen Gibbs added eight rebounds. Damian Chong Qui had seven rebounds.
The Seahawks evened the season series against the Mountaineers with the win. Mount St. Mary's defeated Wagner 70-56 on Jan. 19. Wagner faces Bryant on the road on Thursday. Mount St. Mary's plays Central Connecticut on the road on Thursday.
