St. John's gets first Big East win by beating Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- D'Angelo Harrison and Phil Greene IV scored 20 apiece Wednesday night to lead St. John's to its first Big East win of the season, 83-70 over Providence.
Rysheed Jordan added 15 points and Sir'Dominic Pointer had scored 14 and grabbed seven rebounds for St. John's (12-4, 1-3), which shot 51 percent overall and made a season-high 10 3-pointers.
Providence (13-5, 3-2) trailed 49-32 early in the second half but used a 16-2 run, during which St. John's made just 1 of 10 field goals, to cut the Friars' deficit to 51-48 when Tyler Harris made a pair of free throws with 10:13 remaining.
Back-to-back 3s by Greene and Harrison pushed the St. John's lead back to nine about 3 minutes later and back-to-back layups by Greene made it 69-57 with 3:32 left.
The Red Storm made 14 of 16 free throws, including 9 of 10 by Pointer, from there to seal it.
Kris Dunn had 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for Providence.
