St. John's still awaiting eligibility ruling on freshmen

Published Oct. 21, 2015 7:27 p.m. ET

St. John's was able to strike on the recruiting trail early into Chris Mullin's tenure as head coach, landing point guard Marcus LoVett Jr. in May, followed by defensive-minded Kassoum Yakwe in August.

However, it is unclear if either consensus four-star recruit will be able to play this season. Zach Braziller of the New York Post reported on Wednesday afternoon from St. John's media day that the team has not received an update on the eligibility status of either freshman.

According to Braziller, Mullin has praised the play of LoVett and Yakwe through the first month of practice.

LoVett is a flashy 6-foot point guard who wowed fans with his handles during the Red Storm Tip-Off last Friday night. Yakwe, a 6-foot-7 forward, should make an immediate impact on the defensive end, if eligible. He shared the same frontcourt as Kansas freshman Cheick Diallo last season. Diallo is also waiting for a ruling on his eligibility. Their school, Our Savior New American in Centereach, New York, has been under NCAA investigation.

St. John's opens the 2015-16 season on Nov. 13 against Wagner.
